Vaginal discharge can be of different colors and odor. Most of the women of the childbearing age have a thick discharge after a monthly cycle. Women may have white discharge which turns yellow on exposure to air and vaginal discharge may also have different colors and smells. If a woman is having a yellow color discharge that also has a foul smell, then one may be suffering from a serious infection or abnormality. The pelvic inflammatory disease such as inflammation of fallopian tubes, ovaries or uterus can cause yellow discharge.
Some of the common diseases and infections in women, which can cause yellow discharge, are Bacterial vaginosis, Gonorrhea, Chlamydia and Trichomoniasis.

Cervical polyp: It can cause irregularity in monthly cycle and inflammation of cervical canal. The woman has a high estrogen level and may have blood clots and thick white discharge, after sex.
Bacterial vaginosis: It is not a STD and it can be caused either by a yeast infection or infection of Trichomonas vaginalis.
Vaginitis: It is a fungal infection, which can also cause burning sensation and irritation.
Cervicitis: It is the infection of the genitals where the cervix is infected either by an injury or by a STD. Certain birth control devices such as diaphragm and cervical cap can also cause the infection.
Chlamydia: The bacteria, Chlamydia trachomatis can cause the infection of chlamydia. It is a type of the STDs, in which, the infection can be caused to the eyes and the genitals.
Trichomoniasis: It is a form of STD and it can be caused by the infection of Trichomonas vaginalis. The symptoms of the infection include the secretion of foul smelling yellow-green discharge. In some cases, the patient may have lower abdomens pain and it can be also be transmitted through oral sex. Symptoms generally appear in a woman after five to twenty eight days of infection or the woman may have the infection without showing any symptoms.
Gonorrhea: It is also a form of STD, in which, the infection is caused by Neisseria gonorrhea bacteria. The infection spreads through intimate physical contact. The bacteria mostly infect the uterus, fallopian tubes and cervix. In U.S. people suffering from Gonorrhea have to inform it to the American government to prevent spreading and to get proper treatment. Women suffering from the disease may have symptoms such as brown discharge, fever, throat infection and pain in abdomen.
Chlamydia: It is a form of STD that is more common in people who have multiple partners. The symptoms of the disease are brown discharge, rectal pain, painful intercourse, anal discharge, vomiting, loss of appetite and painful urination.
Vaginal creams can be used to prevent infections, and in diet one can take yoghurt and cranberry juice to retain the balance of the bacteria in the area.
