Painful Menstrual Periods (Dysmenorrhoea) Causes, Treatment

Menstrual cycles can turn out to be a terrible experience for women especially when they are the kinds who are not used to bearing a lot of pain. It is common to hear women complaining of abdominal pain and pain in their legs and thighs when their periods are on. Some are brave, and some have very good immunity because of which they are able to deal with the pain very easily. However, there are some women who constantly need to take pain killers or other kinds of pills and tonics to subside their pain. Of course, to avoid the pain from worsening, women do prefer reducing the amount of physical activity they have to do so that they are not very stressed and feel less bothered by the pain. But then there are those brave women too who can carry on with even the most physically demanding tasks during their periods.

Besides these women are those who suffer from a menstrual cycle problem of dysmenorrhoea. While mild pain and discomfort is something that affects every woman when her periods are on, dysmenorrhoea is a slightly complicated case where the pain does not stop at all. The occurrence of this pain is usually found before and after the menstrual cycle too.

Under normal circumstances, the menstrual cycle is of 28 days, which means that approximately once every month the periods occur. These periods stay for 3-7 days. But when a woman is suffering from dysmenorrhoea, the pain tends to occur even before the cycle in the lower abdomen, and continues to stay till after the cycle gets over.

Causes of dysmenorrhoea can be many, ranging from vitamin imbalances in the body to hormonal problems or complications that can occur. Sometimes the uterus catches some diseases or infections because of which it becomes weak and such a problem occurs. Then there are also those women who have been taking some kind of contraceptives for long, or have had multiple abortions. These things are almost like playing with your own body's biological cycle and messing with it, because of which several complications tend to occur, and dysmenorrhoea is one of them.

Increasing the amount of calcium, zinc, vitamins and magnesium rich foods during the time the menstrual cycle is on helps in getting rid of the pain. Of course, if you have a severe case, then there is no way that you can afford to neglect this problem and you need get a check up with a doctor done as soon as possible.

The best way to deal with any kind of problems that relate to your menstrual cycle is to adopt a healthy diet. This is because a healthy diet will ensure a balanced intake of all the important vitamins and minerals for the body. Further, your hormonal system will remain balanced. Regular exercising for those women who are obese also helps to get rid of problems relating to menstrual cycles. Obese women have more chances of dysmenorrhoea as compared to other women.
