Home Remedies for Dysmenorrhea

Having monthly menstrual cycles is a process that most of us are very used to. Having a certain amount of pain or cramping during this time is also normal. However, when these cramps become extremely painful and restrict a woman's daily movement, they are called Dysmenorrhea. Dysmenorrhea can be very difficult for a woman and can even extend to a point that it starts happening in between periods as well.

Dysmenorrhea is not incurable. If it is caused due to certain problems in the reproductive system or an underlying condition in the body and hormone system, it can be cured with the help of a course of medicinal therapy. Surgery is also an option for those who suffer from the severest form of a painful menstrual period. However, if one does not have very severe cramps nor has secondary dysmenorrhea, then there are several home remedies for dysmenorrhea that can be tried to reduce the pain.

The first method that doctors prescribe for the pain is to change one's diet and exercise in a healthier manner. One of the easiest ways to temporarily block out the pain and work through the day is to use painkillers. For lesser pain, using aspirin or Tylenol is an effective solution. For a slightly higher degree of pain, painkillers are the prescribed drugs to be used. It is advised to take the medication some two days before the menstrual cycle is due to start and continue it till two days after the cycle ends. If you do not want to use heavy amounts of medicines to keep the pain in check, there are other ayurvedic and simple herbal remedies as well. These are completely natural and do not cause any unwanted side effects either.

One of the most effective ways to treat dysmenorrhea naturally is by Beet Root. Beet Root juice, made by squeezing two to three fresh beetroots, contains anti-oxidants and haemoglobin, both of which are required to keep the body fit during periods. Another simple ingredient is ginger. Making ginger tea daily and drinking two to four cups is very beneficial and effective home remedies for dysmenorrhea. Ginger tea should be sweetened and had after the meals of the day for the best effect. The Papaya fruit contains fibres which makes the contractions in the cervix and uterus happen with ease and less pain. This in turn, reduces the occurrence of painful menstrual periods.

Another home remedy for the treatment of dysmenorrhea is keeping the pelvic area of the body warm. This can be done with hot baths, massages and keeping a hot-water bottle to the hips while lying down. To further this remedy, practicing simple yoga poses like curling up into a ball, partial lungers or the diamond pose can be very effective. However, before undertaking any home remedy, be sure to consult your gynaecologist for the reliability of the same and to check if could possibly interfere in any medicine being taken.
