The large deciduous tree of Baheda is found widely throughout India, in areas with altitudes of up to one thousand meters. With a brownish grey colored bark, the tree usually grows up a height of 30 meters, when matured. Alternately there are broadly elliptic leaves clustered towards the end of the branches, which grow up to 10 to 12 cm in length and 7 to 14 cm in breadth. The flowers blossom in the month of may and have quite offensive colors, yet are quite simple solitary flowers in auxiliary spikes. The fruits of this tree are ovoid grey drupes, and the amazing kernels are sweet. In India this herb is native and abundantly found in the states of Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab and Maharashtra.

There are many chemicals inside the Baheda plant and many of these are used for medications and treating ailments. The chemicals found in Baheda are: sitosterol, gallic acid, ellagic acid, chebulagic acid, galloyl glucose, fatty acid, protein, oxalic acid, tannin, palmitic acid, oleic acid, linoleic acid, galactose, glucose and ethyl gallate. Although some of these chemicals have complex scientific terms but chemicals like glucose and proteins help us understand how vital this herb for the human body. In regard to the uses of these chemicals, the plant itself is very beneficial in helping various ailments and diseases. This herb is one of the key ingredients in Triphala, which is a mixture of Amalaki (Emblica officinalis), Bibitaki (Terminalia belerica) and Haritaki (Terminalia chebula).
