Impetigo is highly contagious infection and simple home remedies for impetigo contribute effectively in getting rid of it. Initially it occurs as a red sore which erupts and oozes and forms a yellowish crust. It can infect others by using common comb, towel, toys, clothes etc. Scratching or touching the sores with bare hands shall be avoided as it can spread to other parts of the body too.
It is a bacterial infection so cleanliness is the primary home remedy for impetigo. Keeping the whole body clean and dry and using cloth or cotton for touching or cleaning of the affected area is the best practice. Scrubbing the lesions with gauze and washing them with antiseptic soap can be helpful. Later cover the lesions with gauze to avoid direct touches.
Turmeric is a very good antiseptic and helps in curing impetigo too. Applying a pinch of turmeric topically works as a home remedy for impetigo. Turmeric mixed with clarified butter can be used as a covering and healing paste for all day long. Consuming turmeric with a glass of warm water or with a glass of warm milk before going to bed also helps in curing the infection.
Aloe vera gel applied at the lesions 4-5 times in a day also helps in alleviating the problem. A good home remedy for impetigo can be, first cleaning the lesions with a mixture of half cup each of rosemary leaves oil and thyme mixed with 2 cups of water and boiled for few minutes. On cooling, clean the lesions with this mixture and apply aloe vera gel when area has dried.
Bathing in soapy water for sometime can also be a treatment for impetigo. Using hydrogen peroxide or salt as a mixture with the water also treats the sores caused due to infection. Bathing with tea tree oil mixed with water or applying tea tree oil directly on the lesions also treats the infection. Washing the affected parts by tea tree oil for few times in a day also helps in curing the infection. Mustard oil application has also been found useful in alleviating impetigo. Application of grapefruit seeds extract or garlic oil is also an effective herbal treatment for impetigo.
Applying a paste of vaseline and cornstarch is also an effective home remedy for impetigo. Vaseline heals the sore and cornstarch help in drying them quickly. Few evidences have shown that charcoal poultices applied on the lesions overnight is also helpful in curing this problem.
Use of herb like golden seal is also an effective herbal treatment as it contains properties to cure bacterial infections. Golden seal can be consumed in organic form or as a supplement in the dosage of 250 mg thrice a day. Myrrh oil mixed with honey, 10-15 mg a day, is an effective home remedy for impetigo and can cure the infection quickly. Consumption of zinc through rich natural sources or as a supplement also helps the body in curing the infection on its own.
Diet rich in green, yellow and orange vegetables bolster the immunity and help removing the infection. Fruits like papaya, grapes, peach, orange, pineapple in juice form are effective in combating the infection.
