Home Remedies for Swelling in the Body

Most swellings or edemas are a result of water retention. This happens due to many different reasons. It is not a disease but can happen because of some injury like a sprain in the ankle. If it happens not because of an injury, it could be due to pregnancy or other internal conditions for which you must go and see a medical professional. If you find a swelling in your breast, you must make an appointment to meet with your doctor as soon as possible to make sure it is not malignant.

There are home remedies that you can use to elevate swelling. Some are things that you have to abstain from, such as salt. Too much of salt means water retention. Therefore, when you have edema, it is wise to lessen your intake of salt. Some are things that you take in, such as barley drink, which will help the kidneys and indirectly help reduce your swelling.

You can also take acid cider vinegar every morning, 2 tablespoon full with 8 ounces of water. Apple cider vinegar removes excess water in cells and tissues. This is why they say that apple cider can keep you slim, as fat people tend to retain water. Apple cider vinegar can remove excess water.

Pregnant women always face swollen lower limbs. One reason is that the uterus heavily presses against the main vena cava that brings blood from the lower limbs to the heart. As the uterus constricts the main blood vessel, fluid will tend to accumulate in the legs and feet. Walking will help move some of the fluids up from the legs, as the contracting muscles during a walk will help move blood up the vena cava.

Another thing that pregnant women must do to overcome swelling of the feet and legs is to drink lots of water. Water will help the sluggish circulation increase in momentum. Water is always good as it removes excess toxins as well. Another way to elevate the swelling of the lower limbs is to rest with the legs above the heart. When sleeping at night, place pillows below the feet and sleep.

There are things that you can apply to reduce swelling. If you just got a swelling because of a sprain, you can first give a cold compress for 30 to 60 minutes to reduce the swelling, followed by heat compress to reduce pain. Continue to alternate cold and heat compresses until the swelling and pain reduces considerably.

Rub the swelling with some mustard oil, it helps in circulation. You can also grind mustard seeds, apply on the swelling, bandage it, and leave it overnight. The swelling will reduce as mustard heats the area, causing the blood vessels to expand and it is easier for blood circulation.

Try some of the remedies above, if you have any swelling particularly in the limbs. If you have any swelling in the eyes, the best remedy for it will be hot and cold compress. If a swelling does not reduce, make an appointment with your doctor so that you can get his advice.
