Spondylitis, a degenerative condition, when affects the lumbar parts of the spine causes lumbar spondylitis; reasons are aging or an injury. There are exercises to help in relieving the pain and improving the elasticity in the affected ligaments.
Physical therapy exercises are very good home remedies for lumbar spondylitis. If the pain is tolerable, back extension is a very good exercise. It is done by lifting the upper part of the body while lying on the floor face down and arms placed under the chest with palms down. If lying down is too painful this can be done by standing a foot away against a wall, placing the arms on the wall and trying to bend the back using combination of arms and lower back muscles.
Exercise ball curls can be an excellent home remedy for lumbar spondylitis. Sitting on an exercise ball with perfect balance and holding about 3lb dumbbell in each hands, first arms should be extended down towards the floor and then curl them up towards the shoulders. This movement shall be done at least 10 times and repeat this set after 30 seconds break. Lifting the exercise ball with legs can be a very good exercise too. Lie down on the floor and hold the ball with the legs and lift it up at least a foot above the floor. Repeat this movement 10 times and whole set again after 1 min break.
Stretch Band exercise is also very effective in the treatment of lumbar spondylitis. Place one end of the band under the right foot and take another end in right hand, now stretch it until it reaches up to the shoulder height. Repeat this 10 times and then switch the leg and hand. Repeat this whole set for at least 5 times.
Another exercise in home remedies for lumbar spondylitis is lumbar stretch. This exercise helps in improving the elasticity of lumbar ligaments which relieves the pain. Lie down on the back and place the hands at hip level, the knees shall be bent at 45 degrees. Now lift the upper part with the help of hands and buttocks and hold the lift for 3 seconds and then slowly come back to the original position. Repeat this whole movement for 10 times.
Standing stretch is also very helpful in relieving the pain caused due to lumbar spondylitis. This can be done by standing against the wall about 18 inches away from it. Put both the hands on the wall at shoulder height and keep right foot ahead of left foot and bend the elbows till the chin is just 3 inches away from the wall, slowly come back to the original position. Repeat this for 10 times and later do it by keeping left foot ahead of right foot.
Yoga poses and sequences are very old and trusted home remedies for lumbar spondylitis. The yoga poses like Shalabhasana (Locust pose) and Bhujangasana (Cobra pose) are very effective in improving the strength and elasticity in the lower back muscles and ligaments. The sequence of Suryanamaskar (Sun salutations A and B) is not only helpful in improving the existing problem but also helps in slowing down the degeneration process of ligaments. However these poses and sequences shall be first perfected under the guidance of a yoga expert and later shall be practiced at home.
Hot and cold water treatment at the affected area is also helpful as it increases the blood flow and improves the elasticity. Massage with warm mustard oil or any other pain absorbing agent also helps in relieving the pain. However massage shall also be done by an expert as extra pressure or pressure at any wrong point may even aggravate the problem.
