Children are often at a very young age given intense training for the stimulation of various activities that involve the brain. They are made to memorise things and indulge in exercises and activities that make their brain sharper. This training not only helps them in gaining and grasping their basic classroom knowledge and education well, but it also helps them otherwise in life to be an alert and active individual of the society, who can draw conclusions, make decisions, analyse things, and give opinions on various things.
One of the most common way of increasing the memory and mental power of children is via the use of games. A typical card game where all the cards are placed upside down in a random order expects children to rule out the cards by matching pairs (making pairs of similar cards). It tests how well children can remember the placement of the cards that they had seen earlier, so that they can quickly match them with their pairs. Similarly, maths tables are also mugged up by children so that it helps them to do faster calculations when they are solving a mathematical problem.
There are several brain teasers that you can play with your child at home, which range in subjects from English to Science. You can play combination puzzle games or make them play brain teasing PC or video games that increase their memory and also help to understand how to associate and link multiple things with one another to come up with a solution to a problem. Puzzles range in difficulty level from low to high, and as your child grows up; you can increase the level gradually.
Games like Sudoku and Crossword are said to be good for mental strength. They make the child think beyond the obvious and increases his or her reasoning and logical ability. Similarly, chess is a great game to train your child to think about alternative options to things.
In the last few years, many people have realised that conventional education in schools which involves spoon feeding and mere textbook knowledge does not turn out to be helpful to children later on their life. To give them the concept of street smartness and to give them practical training, it is essential that there are some creative ways of providing education to the children in schools, so that they learn to 'think' smartly. Keeping this in mind, there are several kinds of workshops that have developed over the years which aim at stimulating the "thinking ability" of the child. You could even think of getting your child enrolled at any institute that engages the child in multiple brain stimulation activities.
At home, you can even make you child go through various activity books that have activities like finding the odd one out, spotting the difference, guessing the next number in a sequence, thinking of a possible ending to an incomplete story, matching different pieces to come up with a complete picture etc.
