Home remedies for hernia can be equally effective in treating the problem as any other medication and helpful in avoiding surgery. Before opting for remedies the type of hernia shall be identified. Hernia is mainly caused due to protrusion of an organ or the muscle of an organ through the cavity that contains it. Most common of all types of hernia is hiatus hernia.
Some precautions taken in eating and sleeping habits constitute primary home remedies for hernia. Lifting the bed from head side by keeping something under the legs of the bed helps in preventing the regurgitation of food in the night and prevents heart-burns. Do not use pillows for this purpose as it increases pressure on the diaphragm. Avoiding consumption of water before and after the meal within half an hour helps in heart-burns. Drinking water during the meal shall be strictly avoided. Small meals shall be taken in place of two large meals. Chewing well before consuming the food is another good practice.
Dietary discipline is another effective home remedy for hernia. Ideally half of the diet should be of fruits and vegetables and half full of proteins, carbohydrates and fat. Stress should be on consuming more of seeds, whole grain, nuts and lightly cooked vegetable whereas over processed food shall be avoided. Alcohol or alcoholic beverages, smoking, tea, coffee, spicy food shall be strictly avoided. Tomato and carrot juice are very good at treating hernia, consumption of any of these juice half an hour before the meal is ideal.
Herbs are magical home remedies for hernia. Plenty of herbs like licorice root, slippery elm, black walnut, sheep sorrel and fennel seeds taken in powder form or in capsules can improve the digestive system and help in improving from hernia. Calcium phosphorica promote healthy cell production and helps in fighting hernia. Aloe Vera juice one glass everyday before every meal provides great relief from several gastrointestinal problems.
Evening primrose oil and digestive enzymes can also be taken as a supplement in capsule form to improve digestive system and treat hernia. Chamomile tea with slippery elm is a great home remedy for hernia. One teaspoon of the paste of bark of slippery elm mixed with chamomile tea and sipped slowly helps in treating hernia.
Another preparation has been found to have great curative property; this is made by using easily available herbs. One teaspoon each of lemon leave balm and slippery elm bark, quarter teaspoon of catnip leaves, 1-1/2 cup of boiling water and 1-1/2 cup of apple or carrot juice. Mix the herbs with boiling water and stir it for 15 min, strain the herbs out and mix the juice with it. Drink one cup of this after every meal.
Exercises are good home remedies for hernia too. Diaphragmatic breathing is one of them, lie down on the back and bend the knees so that heels touch the buttocks and breathe. Push your abdomen upwards while inhaling and down while exhaling. Practicing ‘shavasana’ or dead body pose everyday can be very helpful. Do not bend or lie down right after the meal. Extra care shall be taken while lifting heavy objects and walking on uneven surface. Mental and physical fatigue shall be avoided.
