Home remedies for fever are treatments for fever and not for the cause of fever and shall not be treated as substitute for medication. Fever is not a disease in itself but symptom of any disease or infection in the body and natural treatment for fever are extremely helpful in relieving the problems caused due to rise in body temperature. Rise of body temperature by 1 degree Celsius above normal body temperature qualifies to be called as fever.
Drinking lot of water and juices are very helpful in fever. Since body looses lot of water during fever and opens sweat ducts when fever is receding, supply of essential fluids through water and juice helps the immunity system of the body to flush out the infection. Avoid solid foods and prefer liquid food. Cow's milk in small quantities 2-3 times a day, eating boiled or streamed vegetables, fresh fruits, honey, yoghurt are easily digestible and suitable to body during fever. Rice cooked with lentils and spices like cumin seeds, ginger, coriander and turmeric provides nourishment and is light on the digestive system.
Tea of fenugreek seeds is an effective home remedy for fever, boil 2-3 teaspoons of fenugreek seeds with 1 cup of water, strain the mixture and then add a drop of clarified butter to it, drinking this tea helps in bringing down the body temperature quickly.
Drinking juice of sweet basil twice or thrice a day also helps in reducing fever. Another recipe used as home remedy for fever can be made by mixing equal quantities of dried thyme, chamomile and linden flowers. One teaspoon of this mixture boiled in 1 cup of water and drinking hot, several times a day, promotes sweat flow and reduces body temperature. Few other natural treatments for fever are teas made by linden flowers or willow bark or black elder; however, black elder shall be used for patients who cannot tolerate aspirin in place of willow bark. Mixture of 10 gm of raisins and ginger boiled in 200 ml of water, boiled till water is reduced to 50 ml, strain this mixture and drink it hot.
This is a very helpful natural treatment for fever. Applying sandalwood paste on forehead or paste made by mint leaves, pepper and ginger also works as a good home remedy.
Few other well known home remedies for fever are applying sponges. Wet towel can be rubbed all over the body and let the body evaporate the water itself. Wet compresses are also effective natural treatment for fever. Applying towel on the forehead soaked with cool water also helps in comforting the patient and bringing down the temperature. Cold baths is a good home remedy for fever in children. Few compulsory precautions shall be taken during fever like not giving aspirin to the children. If nausea does not allow drinking anything, sucking ice or blocks of frozen juices can be opted. Diets rich in iron or zinc or any supplement shall be avoided completely as iron makes the body stiff and zinc is not consumed by the body. Avoid sudden temperature changes.
