Acne is a type of skin infection which causes pimples to grow on your skin. Excess of oil production by oil glands in the skin make pimples grow. Dead skin and bacteria combine with oil and cause clogging up of skin.
Irritation caused by pimple can vary from appearance to severe pain. Therefore proper treatment will only benefit, if you know the type of acne you are infected with. Common types of acne are -
Whitehead - It is mild form of acne and it develops in the skin when skin pore is blocked. Due to blockage, components like oil, germ like bacteria and dead skin get trapped resulting in development of white surface on skin.
The outcome is termed as a white head and it is one of the most common acne problems which you can face. Life cycle of white head is short as compared to black head.
Blackhead - It occurs when skin pore is partially blocked. This partial opening of pore lets bacteria; oil and dead skin to slowly drain into the skin surface. Skin gets black due to reaction of damaged skin and oxygen present in the air. Blackhead is comparatively stable structure as compared to white heads so it takes more time to heal.
Papules - These are solid elevation of skin with no visible fluid in. Papules vary in size from pin head to one centimeter. Color of papules can be brown, purple, pink or red. Papules have no heads and they are inflamed, red and tender. It is advised not to scratch papules as skin may get more infected and crusty.
Pustules - These are small elevation of skin containing pus material in it. Pustules are actually collections of neutrophils; which is an abundant type of white blood cells. Pustules are inflamed structured and they appear as red circle with white or yellow center. Pustules tends to be irritating and people often pop them but make sure to clean it as it may infect the skin with pus.
Nodules - These are quite similar to pustules but nodules have greater life cycle. Nodules are much more painful and their size is much greater than pustules. They are large, hard and painful bumps under the skin surface.
Scarring is very common and unresolved nodules leave scar behind which can cause development of nodules again and again. Nodules are very painful and squeezing nodules can prolong it further.
Cysts - These are similar to nodules acne but cysts are more painful as they are filled with pus. Its size can be as large as 5 millimeter. Squeezing cysts cause deep infection and have a very prolonged duration for healing.
Conglobata acne - It is severe form of acne, which is mostly found in males. It consists of interconnected dead tissues known as lesions, along with blackheads spread on large area. It is very severe, painful and cause irrevocable damage to skin.
Gram-negative acne - It is severe form and it is due to bacterial infection. It comprises of range of cysts and pustules. It is very rare condition and chances of its infection are very low.
These are common acne types seen in people. Treatment of acne often varies with type you have but people should know how to treat them at home.
