Causes
Suffering from cramps is common in women during monthly cycle and it is caused because of the release of the chemical substance which lines the uterus. In case the patient has excess prostaglandin - the contraction can get very strong and painful. The cramps are mainly caused due to reduction of oxygen supply to the uterine muscles. It is found in more than 3/4 of women and about 5 to 6 percent of the women may suffer from excess pain. This kind of pain may increase till the age 20 years and after that it may decrease.
Symptoms
In the primary condition the symptoms are backache, vomiting, leg pain, headache and nausea. The condition may affect women who are at the start of menstrual cycle in which the cycles lasts not for more than one or two days.
In secondary condition the pain starts after many years of the onset of monthly cycles and it can give pains in the last few years of ovulation. The secondary condition (which is called Secondary Dysmenorrheal) the cramps are caused by medical condition called endometriosis. It is the condition in which the patient suffers from abnormalities of the inner lining of the uterus. Sometimes the condition is non-malignant and the patient may have non malignant growth of the muscular layer of the uterus. It can be found in medical conditions such as pelvic inflammatory disease, cervical narrowing, uterine fibroids etc.
To test if the condition is secondary Dysmenorrhea or not, the doctor may have to conduct radiologic studies which include ultrasound, laproscopy which involves inserting tiny object into the lighted tube through incision to view the internal abdominal tube and the reproductive organs.
