Home Remedies for Shiny Hair

SocialTwist Tell-a-Friend

Healthy hair is beautiful and shiny. When you undergo a lot of so-called treatments in the salons, you will soon have a build-up of chemicals that make your hair dull and lifeless. To get back your natural shine, you must remove the years of build up. Your hair may also be dry or damaged and therefore looks dull and lifeless. There are many home remedies for shiny hair.

Before you look at home remedies, stay away from junk food like all oily fried stuff. Oily does not mean more shine for the hair! Also lessen the salt, sugar and your coffee intake. Eat lots of vegetables and fruits and drink lots of water. This is important whether you are treating hair or skin. Now let us talk a little on living a healthy lifestyle and home remedies for shiny hair.

Hair shaft is made of scales. When you have shiny hair, these scales lie smoothly on the shaft and light reflects from it like a mirror. But when you have dull and lifeless hair, your "mirror" is 'shattered'. The scales are ruffled, and are not smooth. It's like when you comb your hair so that it falls in place you will see light being reflected. But when you ruffle your hair up, there is very little light reflected.

Oiling can keep the scales smooth. Oiling daily is important for dull, lifeless hair. You can use either coconut, almond, olive oil or castor oil. Even unrefined sesame oil is good.

Almond oil has the least smell and so it's a good choice. When you put oil on your hair, put just a little bit. Do it every day, after you shampoo your hair using a very mild or herbal shampoo. If you cannot take the oil, then just use the rinse below to remove any excess oil. If it's still too oily, rub with a dry towel. You just need very little oil to smoothen and shine your hair. Once a week put a lot of oil and let it stand for at least an hour. Overnight is better. Then you can use mild shampoo to wash it off. You'll have shiny hair in no time.

Use a rinse to keep the shine. Commercial shampoos will create a build-up of residue. This residue will accumulate inside the scales and make the hair look dull and lifeless. Rinse with some lime juice or vinegar each time after a shampoo. Lime juice and vinegar are astringents, and will remove any residue. By removing the residue, the scales can lie flat on the shaft and this will give shine.

Another home remedy for shiny hair is smothering with mayonnaise. Mayonnaise has eggs and oil; both are very good. Take a lot of mayonnaise and rub it into your hair. Leave it for about an hour. Put a plastic wrap such as the cling wrap or a shower cap. This will keep the hair warm and allow the concoction to work its wonders. You can either use a very mild shampoo or rinse it with white vinegar to remove the excess mayonnaise.

You can easily use one of the home remedies for shiny hair such as putting the right amount of oil and rinsing it off with a vinegar or lemon rinse, daily. In no time your hair will be nice and shiny.
