Natural Home Remedies for Canker Sores

Home remedies for canker sores effectively treat the problem and provide relief without any side effects. Firstly one should be able to distinguish between cold sores and canker sores. Canker sores are caused by herpes virus but they are not contagious and occur on the inner side of lips or cheek and sometimes on the tongue, unlike to cold sores which occur close to lips and on face.

Disinfecting the mouth as much as possible is the main aim of most of the home remedies for canker sores. Applying a pinch of baking powder or a paste made by mixing some water with baking powder, on the blister and leaving it for few minutes helps in disinfecting the affected area and provides immediate relief from pain. Rinsing the mouth with a mixture of a glass of warm water and one teaspoon of baking soda few times in a day also alleviates the problem and infection.

Grape fruit seed extract, 5-6 drops, mixed with water is an excellent mouthwash and works as a home remedy for canker sores. One teaspoon of soda and salt mixed with warm water can also be used to gargle and rinse the mouth for treating canker sores. Rinsing the mouth with plum juice is also an effective home remedy for canker sores, a cotton ball dabbed in plum juice can be pressed against the sores for 2-3 minutes for quick relief from pain.

Onion also treats canker sores well, pressing onion slice against the blister helps in curing the infection. Tea bags are also used as a home remedy for canker sores, pressing the tea bags against sore for few minutes leaves tannic on the blister which has curative properties for canker sores.



Application of aloe vera gel also helps in curing canker sores. Soak coriander leaves in water for 5 minutes and then strain the mixture and use the water as a mouthwash for treating canker sores. Honey is also an effective home remedy for canker sores it can be used as a paste on the sore for few minutes and then rinsed out with water. Another remedy can be made by boiling a mixture of half a liter of water and two tablespoon of marjoram for ten minutes, later strain this mixture and when it is warm gargle the mouth for a quick recovery from the infection.

Placing a piece of sorrel over the sore for few minutes also cures canker sores. Tea tree oil is another home remedy for canker sores it can be applied topically on the blister as well as mixing one part of it with nine parts of water and rinsing the mouth with it everyday regularly for a week, cures the problem effectively. Milk of magnesia also treats the infection well it shall be swished around in the mouth for few minutes to form a coating which heals the affected part.

Eating food rich in vitamin B helps in curing canker sores. Green leafy vegetables and whole grain are good sources of vitamin B. Eating yoghurt is very useful as it provides acidophilus which controls and prevents canker sores effectively.
