The word metabolism refers to the rate at which the body burns calories. This differs from person to person. While some people are blessed with a high metabolism, others have a lower metabolism. This means that the first kind can eat with gusto and exercise very little and still manage to burn away enough calories to maintain a good figure. Those with a low metabolism find it very difficult to lose weight and are only able to maintain a certain weight at best. Metabolism is not something that remains fixed all life long, however. It can be increased with the help of a few simple steps which are easy to follow.
First of all, one must know why they have a low metabolism. Low metabolism because of a thyroid condition or due to age requires medicines more than diet and exercise techniques to correct it. If it is because of general reasons then the metabolism can be increased with ease. Next one has to change their eating patterns. Eating three large meals a day give a lot of time to the body to slowly use the calories. By shifting over to eating five to six small meals a day, the body needs to digest the food frequently and so starts to use up calories more frequently. Cutting down on the carbohydrates, fats and junk food in totality is also a good step to take to reduce the number of calories the body has to burn to begin with.
Another way is to drink a lot cold water. This brings down the body temperature and so the body will burn calories to produce heat and bring it up to normal once again. Once this process is repeated a number of times at a regular pace, it will start to permanently alter the metabolism. Aerobic exercise is known to affect the metabolism in a positive way. Doing aerobic exercise daily is a great way to increase metabolism. One must do the exercise for over half an hour each day for a long period of time without a stop in order to raise the metabolism significantly. Along with aerobics, taking up weight training is a great supplement that allows one to increase metabolism in an effective manner.
Among other ways to increase metabolism, one to keep in mind is to condition your body in a better manner. Developing the habit of waking up at 7 am in the morning and sleeping by 11 pm or earlier gives the body time to rest and reduces chances of snacking in the night and missing breakfast in the morning. Having a full and healthy breakfast is also a great way to increase metabolism. One should avoid using the car or transport for even the smallest tasks such as getting the groceries or going over to a neighbour's house. Walking or cycling instead keeps the body active all day long, which will ultimately force the body to burn calories it would have stored as fatty deposits instead. Follow all these tips with care and very soon you will find that your metabolism has indeed increased!
