Healthy Diet in Old Age

A healthy diet is important for every individual, whatever is the age of the person. However when a person starts to get old, the importance of a healthy diet increases even more. This is because when a person turns old, the body has a tendency to become weak and fragile, and all the internal processes start to get weak. The body immunity too starts to fall, and in such a case, the person holds a greater chance of catching a lot of diseases and problems. To make sure that the person remains fit and does not have to suffer from so many problems, it is important that elderly people follow a good and healthy diet that helps them to stay fit.

A healthy diet is one which has all the required nutrients needed by the body so that the person stays fit. A regular healthy diet is also often termed as a balanced diet which has a balanced amount of all the important nutrients. But as a person grows, the human body has different kinds of requirements at different stages in life, and here is where the concept of customised healthy diets comes in.

To look at it in a simple manner, a child is more active in sports and other kinds of activities, and thus, his protein requirements are more than that of an old person who does not indulge so much in physical movements. But the old person needs strong bones, which means that he or she needs more calcium than proteins. Similarly, those who are labourers and work on field jobs carrying heavy stuff around need more calories in their food as compared to others who have desk jobs, thereby making a difference between the amount of carbohydrates and fats that these people need to consume.

Therefore, a healthy diet varies from one person to another. Healthy diets for old people are important because as they grow old, they catch diseases and problems and their diets change on the basis of these diseases. However, some basic things that remain common among all diets for all elderly people are the reduction of salt in the food, and the reduction of fatty substances too. This is because less salt keeps the blood pressure for old people in control, while lesser fat means that their body cholesterol levels are under control. Many scientific and medical researches and studies have found out that high cholesterol levels and blood pressure issues are the two main problems bothering old people.

An increased amount of calcium and Vitamin D are both important for bone health. This is the reason why health experts emphasise on increasing the amount of milk and milk products in diets for old people. Another thing to keep in mind is to increase the amount of fibre foods in their diets, such as more fruits and vegetables. This is because old people have less physical activity because of which they have chances of constipation, and fibre rich foods help in dealing with it.
